The Manassas Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy is proud to offer a scholarship endowed by Virginia Speiden Carper, whose membership in the Manassas Chapter spanned decades - from 1927 to her death in 2005. Her mother, Effie Lee Nelson Speiden, was one of the original members of the Manassas Chapter and the daughter of Confederate Lieutenant Edwin Nelson of Co. H, 15th Va. Cavalry. Effie married Albert Speiden, a Manassas architect, and the house he built for her is now part of the Manassas Museum System. The Speiden-Carper House is a tribute to the architectural style of the era, and it is the site of piano lessons given by Mrs. Carper to many who grew up in Manassas.
