Scholarships

The Chapter annually awards the Effie Lee Nelson Speiden Scholarship, endowed by her daughter, Virginia Speiden Carper, to a young woman who will attend a Virginia institute of higher education, including the Northern Virginia Community College. The Chapter is also proud to sponsor local students for Virginia Division UDC and General UDC scholarships.

The Effie Lee Nelson Speiden Scholarship is a one-time award of $1,500, which is paid to the school at the beginning of the school year. Applications are due by May 2, 2010; Chapter members meet with applicants in May; and applicants are notified in June of the Chapter's selection. Click on the links in the table above for additional information or contact the 2nd Vice President of the Manassas Chapter UDC.

Note that the deadlines in the table for the other UDC scholarships are very early in the year. These are the actual deadlines for applicants to submit their packages to the Manassas Chapter UDC, which in turn provides the packages to the Virginia Division UDC by April 30 and to the General UDC by March 15. In addition, the application packages for these scholarships need to include official (sealed) transcripts, so you'll need to allow your school time to provide them. The Chapter's 2nd Vice President should have updated application forms for General and Virginia Division scholarships in January, but can provide you last year's forms as worksheets in advance of receiving the official forms.

Current college students are not eligible for our Chapter's scholarship, which is for local graduating high school seniors. However, the Virginia Division and General UDC scholarships are 4-year scholarships, and you can apply for them while attending college. You do not need to be a member of the UDC or CoC to apply, but you do need to be qualified for membership in the UDC. Also, unless you are a member, your lineage must be lineal, not collateral. This means that your service-member ancestor must be in your direct line (e.g., great-great-great-grandfather, not -uncle). Go to our "Sources" page if you need help getting started on finding proof.
